Black Enough?

"I find myself dismayed that some established black leaders, talking heads, etc. seem to be trying to undermine Obama's campaign.
"Regardless of the course that brought him here, isn't it still a good thing that a black man (from ANY background) could have an opportunity to become a legitimate candidate for the presidency of the United States?
"How about 'Well, he's not as black as we'd like, but he's the blackest thing we've got going, so let's go ahead and back him. Maybe if he does well, we'll be able to get somebody blacker in next time'. Because if Obama's not black enough, does that mean Hillary is?
* * *

"Any black person who questions whether or not another black person is 'black' enough should be sent back to 1805. Then they can buy into the whole 'house nigger' and 'field nigger' distinction without having to strain themselves. Because, don't get it twisted, that's all this silly conversation is really about. You have some black folks who think that any black person who has a story that differs from theirs (what they wear, how they talk, where they live, where or if they went to school) is 'trying to act white' or not 'keepin' it real'. To quote Chris Rock, 'yeah, keepin' it real dumb.'

"By that definition, Oprah, Colin Powell, Ed Brookes, Denzel Washington and Danny Glover are white and Kevin Federline (he's even got a black baby momma who he ignores!) is black. And I don't think we want to make that trade.

* * *

"I hate race. All it does is annoy me. You have white people that hate black people, black people that hate white people, white people who go out of their way to make it look like they like black people, black people who aren't black enough, white people who act too black, etc. and all that arises is anger and annoyance from all the political correctness. The world would be better off if everybody was orange. I'm voting for the damn Blue Man Group."

Booker T. Washington said:

"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs -- partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs....There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."
