"We constantly badger each other about not being Black enough, light enough, dark enough. We complain about talking white, or acting white. We demand that every single one of us know every single thing about Black History or we tell them they don't know who they are. Our most visible media members rave about Ghettofabulous, ######in' and the Bling-bling. We have succumbed too the American ideal of entitlement, or believing we deserve because of what someone else has done. We don't promote unity within our own people.Individuality is not a luxury. Unity should not mean giving up one's individualism. The right to be an individual is a divine one. However, individualism should not over power the need for unity. Until we, as a people, can stop publicly and privately denigrating our own, we can not expect others to, either."

Booker T. Washington said:
"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs -- partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs....There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."
